Christmas at Mfuwe Lodge

Mfuwe Lodge has something of a reputation for celebrating Christmas in a big way, and the 2009 version was no exception! With a full compliment of guests, many of whom visit every Christmas, the festive season was recognized with great enthusiasm. On Christmas Eve the “Luangwa Valley” traditionally gets together for a candlelit carol service and “sundowner” gathering. Thankfully the threatened rain kept away, and amidst the ‘winterthorns’ of Kalawani Pan, the Luangwa Safaris Choir joined voices with the assembled crowd to put everyone in the yuletide spirit…with the help of a “little” festive food and drink. In spite of full stomachs, on returning to the lodge the feasting continued with a 5-course Christmas Eve dinner….

On Christmas Day an early morning shower didn’t deter guests from going out on the game drives…their dedication was rewarded with some good game viewing and a surprise in the bush….a special Christmas Bush Breakfast complete with Buck’s Fizz, smoked salmon, Italian panatoni, mince pies……and a visit from “Father Christmas” himself, ably assisted by his ‘little helpers’, and the Mfuwe Lodge Choir! Santa even had some presents to distribute, much to the delight of everyone…especially the younger guests! Suitably replete, the guests then had a brief respite (and probably a welcome nap) before sitting down to a traditional Christmas lunch…with more than the usual trimmings! Those people capable of movement then enjoyed an evening game drive before sitting down to a buffet dinner of delicious imported Italian “goodies”....There was no let up on Boxing Day either…with a special “Braii” (BBQ), a Christmas Quiz (to exercise the brains), a performance from the “SEKA” theatre group…..and some great viewing of leopards!

All that was missing was some snow……
