Thanks to The Bushcamp Company & Mfuwe Lodge guests' kind donations, we have been able to give the children at Chiwawatala Middle Basic School a prize-giving ceremony at the end of each term for the past two years.
A big thank you to all of our guests who have brought out with them gifts, school supplies and clothes for the children of the Mfuwe community. These are greatly appreciated by the children and there have been smiles and excitement all round! It is very important for us to ensure that we hand out these gifts in a fair and structured way and make sure the pupils understand the value of these gifts and where they have come from. We work closely with Charles Zulu, Head Teacher of Chiwawatala Middle Basic School, and together we decide how these gifts should be shared.
School prize-giving ceremonies have proven to be a great opportunity to hand out these gifts and over the past couple of years we have had the pleasure of presenting a number of guests' donations to the pupils who came the highest in their grades in their end of term exams. We have been able to give out first, second and third prizes in each class, with gifts suitable to their age range. This really motivates the pupils and encourages them to work hard during the term.
We also like to use guests' donations to reward pupils who are working hard in extracurricular activities for example gardening, contributing well in Conservation Club activities and also as prizes in our tree planting competitions. Recently a very young guest kindly donated some of his clothes he had outgrown; these were given out at the under 5 year old clinic at the Kakumbi Clinic in Mfuwe and were very gratefully received along with toys for the young children to play with while they wait for their treatment. We also had a family who brought out over 20, hand-knitted babies’ wooly hats; these to were handed out by nurses to the most deserving mothers in the clinic's postnatal mothers & babies group.
We appreciate it is not easy to pack for your safari holiday or to find room in your suitcase for anything extra, but if you would like to bring any gifts, we have found that the following are easy to pack and very much appreciated by local kids:
So if you have just a little space in your luggage and would like to bring something out with you on your next safari, be assured that it will find a very deserving home. And if every guest brought out a little something, we might even be able to offer prizes for students at the other two schools we support near the Park.
The children of Mfuwe thank you in advance.
