Did you know... elephant tusks are actually elongated incisors and are essentially no different from other teeth? Tusks never stop growing, so older bulls often used to carry tusks weighing well over a hundred pounds each. However, due to the hunting of elephants for their ivory, the average size of tusks has considerably decreased, with the 'big tusk gene' becoming increasingly rare.

Did you also know... the documentary featuring Mfuwe Lodge's annual visitors, "Elephants in the Room", can be seen on UK TV on the 30th July at 9pm on the Discovery/Animal Planet Channel.
