Did you know... a distinctive characteristic shared by both male and female lions is that the tail ends in a hairy tuft? Sometimes the tuft conceals a hard "spine", approximately 5 mm long, which is actually the final sections of tail bone fused together. The lion is the only felid to have a tufted tail, though its function is unclear.
