Where Luangwa's Legacy Meets the Future

The early explorers who first entered this valley did not only come to observe it. The best of them dedicated their lives to protecting it. Norman Carr understood that the wildlife he loved could only survive if the people who lived alongside it had reason to protect it too. That conviction has never left this valley.

The Nyamaluma Game Scout Training School is where Zambia's Department of National Parks and Wildlife (DNPW) prepares its field officers — the scouts responsible for anti-poaching operations, wildlife monitoring, and the protection of one of the continent's most important ecosystems. It sits on the opposite bank of the Luangwa River, a short boat crossing from Chindeni Bush Camp. Most visitors to South Luangwa
never know it exists.

The excursion departs mid-morning and arrives at the water's edge in time for brunch on the riverbank — laid out on the sand, coffee poured, the Luangwa moving quietly past. After brunch, a small boat carries the group across to the school, where a guided tour reveals what game scout training actually involves: the fieldcraft, the tracking, the physical and mental demands placed on men and women who operate in one of Africa's most challenging environments.

Every booking contributes directly to the school — to upgrading its facilities, funding training equipment, and ensuring the next generation of scouts has what they need. Livingstone explored this valley. Carr devoted his life to it. The scouts protect it every day.

This is where Luangwa's past and
its future meet. Cross the river.

All net proceeds from every Scout School booking are donated directly to the Nyamaluma DNPW Game Scout Training School. Your visit funds what keeps this valley protected: training ammunition and firearms, scout field equipment and supplies, educational materials, and classroom facility upgrades. This is not a charitable gesture added to a safari experience. It is the reason the experience exists.
