Where the Spirit of the Original Luangwa Safari Lives

Kuyenda pulses with the authentic rhythm of South Luangwa—where luxury isn’t about extravagance, but about connection, wonder, and immersion in one of Africa’s greatest wilderness areas. Founded by legendary guide Phil Berry, a protégé of Norman Carr, Kuyenda is one of the valley’s most storied bush camps and a place where the traditions of Zambia’s iconic walking safaris continue today. Designed to blend seamlessly into its natural surroundings, the camp offers an experience that feels both timeless and deeply connected to the wild landscape that surrounds it. Five spacious thatched rondavels crown a gentle spring-fed knoll overlooking the Luangwa River and its surrounding floodplains, ensuring wildlife is never far away. From your private deck, elephants stride past, lions call at dusk, and leopards prowl quietly through the grasslands as nature’s theatre unfolds before you. Here, the spirit of the original walking safari lives on.

Experiences.

Elephants in Reception

Each year, between late October and mid-December, entire elephant families wander through Mfuwe Lodge’s reception to feast on fallen wild mangoes—a spectacle so iconic it’s become legend.

Game Drives

Explore the rich diversity and incredible wildlife of the South Luangwa on a game drive. On four wheels, you’ll cover as much of the region as possible and maximise your game-viewing.

Walking Safaris

The walking safari was born in the South Luangwa, so it’s only fitting that many of your outings will be on foot with the very finest guides in our exclusive 140,000 acre section of the park.

Sundowners

As the sun sinks below the horizon, there is nothing better than finding a spectacular spot in the heart of the bush for an ice-cold drink and something to nibble on.

Why Kuyenda?

The heritage camp
Founded by Phil Berry — Norman Carr’s protégé and arguably the finest walking safari guide the Luangwa has ever produced. To walk here is to follow in the footsteps of the people who invented the walking safari.
The finest walking terrain on the circuit
Open plains, palm islands, riverbanks, and natural salt springs — more variety on foot than any other camp on the circuit. No two walks are ever the same.
Five rondavels around a natural spring
Built from eco-friendly thatch and rebuilt each season — Kuyenda’s rustic 1960s charm puts you entirely in the bush. The most back-to-nature camp in the BCC circuit.
Closest Bushcamp to Mfuwe Lodge
Ideal for guests with limited time who still want the full Bushcamp experience.
Classic bushcamp atmosphere
Simple, genuine comfort — nothing extra, nothing missing. Like all BCC camps, discreet WiFi, en-suite bathrooms, farm-to-table cuisine, and comfortable beds throughout.

In Summary

Kuyenda isn’t entry-level—it’s choice-level.
It’s where purity meets purpose, and where luxury is measured in moments: watching wildlife from your deck, a conversation by firelight, and the slow, powerful heartbeat of the wild.

Kuyenda: Rewilded luxury, in its purest form.
