About Us.
Founded in 1999, The Bushcamp Company began with a bold and simple vision: to offer the most authentic safari experience in South Luangwa National Park — the birthplace of the walking safari and one of Africa’s last truly wild places.
What started as four intimate camps — Kuyenda, Chamilandu, Chindeni, and Bilimungwe — together with the iconic Mfuwe Lodge, grew steadily and deliberately. Kapamba was added in 2005 on the banks of the river that bears its name, and Zungulila followed in 2008, completing a circuit of six remote Bushcamps that together form the most unique safari journey in the park. In 2023, The Villas at KuKaya extended the portfolio further — offering a private villa experience just inside the park gate as another perfect gateway to the circuit.
Today BCC is South Luangwa’s largest operator — eight properties, an exclusive use 140,000-acre wilderness concession inside the park, and a guiding tradition that runs directly from Norman Carr, who pioneered the walking safari here in the 1950s, through Phil Berry, arguably the finest walking safari guide the Luangwa has ever produced, to the guides Berry has mentored across the circuit today. Our guides are widely regarded as among the best in Africa — people who have spent decades learning this specific valley, its wildlife, its seasons, and its secrets. They are the heart of delivering an unforgettable experience to our guests.
The classic BCC journey begins at Mfuwe Lodge or The Villas at KuKaya and moves progressively deeper into the wilderness across two or three Bushcamps — each in a distinct habitat, each with its own character. It is a journey that reveals the valley in layers. Guests who make it consistently describe it as one of the most meaningful travel experiences of their lives.
South Luangwa’s wildlife is incredible and rewards those visiting us. Leopard densities among the highest in Africa. Lions hunting open floodplains in daylight. Wild dogs, antelope, buffalo, elephant herds, hippo and crocodile in extraordinary concentrations. It’s not just the sightings that make us who we are either. We deliver unforgettable immersive experiences. Night drives — a rare privilege permitted inside only a handful of national parks in Africa. And walking safaris that change how you see the world. These are experiences that define the journey.
In 2025, Mfuwe Lodge was voted the third best hotel in the world by Travel + Leisure. Five of the six Bushcamps ranked in Condé Nast Traveler’s Top 15 Resorts in Rest of Africa.
Every stay also contributes directly to the valley: over $7 million raised for conservation and community programs since our founding, clean water for over 88,500 people, and 1,300 students supported through education. Each guest becomes part of who we are.
This is not simply a safari company. It is a guardian of one of Africa’s most extraordinary places — and an invitation to experience a truly immersive and authentic safari as few ever have.

A personal note from our ownership:
More About The Team
Behind every BCC safari journey is a team of extraordinary people. Our team of over 200 Zambians, almost all local from the Luangwa valley, are as much a part of the experience as the wildlife and safari camps themselves.
Our Guides
They are the heart of everything we do. Our safari guides are widely regarded as among the finest in Africa — professionals who have spent years, often decades, developing an intimate knowledge of this specific valley. They know individual animals by sight. They read tracks, calls, and the movement of the bush with an accuracy that transforms every drive and every walk into something far beyond a wildlife sighting. They are storytellers, ecologists, and trusted companions in the wilderness. Many of our guides grew up in the communities surrounding the park — their connection to this landscape is not professional. It is personal. And it shows.
Our Camp Teams
At the heart of each camp are the teams who make it feel like home — chefs preparing exceptional meals from fresh farm produce, housekeeping staff who take quiet pride in every detail, and the night watchmen whose calm, reassuring presence means guests sleep deeply even as lions roar beyond the treeline. These are not simply hospitality professionals. They are people who genuinely care about the guests in their camp — and that warmth, which cannot be trained or manufactured, defines the BCC experience as much as anything else.
Our Management
Behind the scenes, our management team ensures that every detail of your journey — from the first enquiry to the last transfer — is handled with expertise, care, and the kind of personal attention that makes a complex safari feel effortless.
Together, this collective of people — our BCC family — is the spirit of The Bushcamp Company. We are blessed to have every one of them, as they are the backbone that delivers one of the greatest classic safari experiences in Africa.

Aaron Mwale
We are thrilled to introduce our in-house photographer/videographer Aaron Mwale and share his work in this gallery.
Aaron has been working for The Bushcamp Company since 2017, and has been our in-house photographer and videographer since 2021. He began as a trainee chef, but quickly realized that his passion lay in photography. Over the years, he has had the opportunity to learn from several talented and well-known photographers such as Isak Pretorius and Greg Cox. His enthusiasm for his work is boundless – and we think you’ll agree that this young man has a very bright future ahead!
Conservation & Community Snapshot
We work closely with the local community, to help conserve precious resources and support education.
As part of The Bushcamp Company’s commitment to the wildlife and people of the South Luangwa, we work closely with the expanding local community and with conservation organisations, to develop projects that help conserve precious resources, support education, and generate a sustainable source of income to those who live around the Park.
This includes working with Conservation South Luangwa (CSL), as they continue their efforts to protect and save South Luangwa’s wildlife and natural resources, our Commit to Clean Water project that drills fresh-water boreholes for the Mfuwe community, and our Meal-a-Day program, that provides 2,500 children a day with lunch.
